To My Child

How can I protect you, my little child?
This world is so cruel.
People haven't been people for a long time,
neither is their love love.

You grow up glowing and trusting,
I do not sleep for fear and suspicion.
How I long from the cup of bitterness---
full of evils, to save you?

The mother inside me trembles,
cries out of helplessness and anger...
After the cracked gold coin
even a brother sells his brother!
Who will love you, my little child?
Who will have so much courage?

When you grow up, my role ends---
the role of a devoted, faithful guardian.
You will spread your wings yourself,
you will bear your head alone,
you will climb your peaks,
driven by thirst and longing.
I will not be your shadow forever,
but will remain your friend---all my life!
